For my first sleep test, I decided to try going to sleep listening to different genres of music and seeing how it affects my sleep quality. I tried three genres of music over the course of one business week: pop, reggaeton, and rap - and wrote down my experiences.
Day: Monday 6/25/18
Time: 11 PM

Hours of Sleep: 5hrs
I listen to pop music pretty much every day, since it’s my favorite genre of music, so it’s only right that I start my music sleeping test with this genre. My Monday night sleep schedule started out like normal. I ate my late-night snack, talked to my roommate for a bit, showered, went to my bed and then put my headphones on. I went on Spotify, played the "Pop Rising" playlist and attempted to sleep.
The first song that played on this playlist was “In My Blood “by Shawn Mendes. Now for everyone who knows me personally, knows that when Shawn Mendes comes on, I pretty much lose my cool and belt out every word to any of his songs. For the first four minutes, I was having my own concert in my room. Obviously, this did not help me sleep, but it did make me tired.
After my own personal concert, I jumped back in bed and let the second song play. Sadly, “Back to You” by Selena Gomez played and once again, I belted out every word and jumped on my bed until the song finished. By this point, I was exhausted, but also energized, and I tried again to go back to bed.
Song #3 plays and this time it’s “Happier” by Ed Sheeran. This song is very slow and allowed me to begin my dozing off until I made it to Dreamland. Ed Sheeran’s voice can make angels cry and also put me right to sleep because I Immediately knocked out halfway through the song. Thank you, Ed, for your amazing voice and for being the winner of putting me to sleep!
When I woke up, I had only gotten five hours of sleep and felt like I pulled an all-nighter at a club and woke up with an attitude and a blur of a repetitive pop beats in my head. Listening to pop music before sleeping sounded like a good idea at first, but if you know every song on the pop radio stationand want to sing all the time, then sleeping with a pop music playlist will give you a bad mo rning

For the next genre, I decided to listen to a playlist dedicated to my second favorite genre…Reggaeton. Now I’m not fluent in Spanish, but I can get down in the club to Latin music. This sleep test included all the tracks in the “¡Viva Latino!” playlist on Spotify. For this test, I decided to cut out my nightly chit chat with my roommate and shower in the morning.
For the first song, “Mi Gente” by J Balvin played and of course, I knew none of the words, but I had a dance concert in my room using my two left feet. Like the night before, when one of my favorite songs comes on, I have the urge to get up and move throughout the whole song. After my four-minute performance, I got back in bed and attempted to shut my eyes through the song transition. My attempt failed miserably.
The next song on that playlist was the “Dura Remix” by Daddy Yankee. This was my first time hearing this song and the beat woke me up to give an encore performance of my bedtime dance concerts. This time, my roommate made a guest appearance for our spontaneous dance party in my room (She has to wake up at 7 am for work and it was already 11 pm at this point).
After song two, I’m fully awake, my roommate is now fully awake and our hype for Reggaeton is on full blast. We played about four more songs before we went to bed and we definitely tired ourselves out. After our two-person concert, I passed out on my bed with the playlist still going and woke up 7 hours later full of energy.
I woke up happy, festive and almost fully energized. I woke up right away, and before my alarm, and I was ready to take on the day. I think the combination of not knowing any of the lyrics and tiring myself out during my roomie dance party, I think that set my good vibes levels way high. I highly recommend the “¡Viva Latino!” on Spotify and listening to Reggaeton before bed to wake up pumped and ready to take on the work day

Before I even start this review, I just want to say that I was out until about 2 am with my friends before I conducted my final music genre experiment….and Drake’s new album “Scorpion” released that night! Compared to my previous two experiments, this one was skewed by a few drinks and a night full of dancing.
Friday night’s sleep playlist was brought to you by "Rap Caviar”, my favorite rap playlist on Spotify. Since Drake’s album was released that night, a majority of the playlist was from his 25-track album. The playlist started off with “Nice for What” which is a Drake song that pretty much everyone knows…even your mom. This song usually gets me hyped up, but because I heard it three times in the club, I just sang the words while still lying in bed.
The next song that came on was “God’s Plan” by Drake, which is that’s another song that I hear five times a day, but since it’s Drake I was still hyped up in bed rapping every word from start to finish. By this point, I was dozing off and next thing I know, I woke up and it was 7 am. I woke up groggy, dehydrated and confused as to why Drake was still playing almost 5hrs later.
Out of all the genres I tested, rap music was the most chill, but my night out definitely contributed to me falling asleep so easily. Pop music kept me up the longest, Reggaeton kept me up the longest because Latin beats are like natural coffee and Pop music drained me because I know the words to every Top 40s pop song.
Would I recommend listening to music before bed? Maybe not during the work week, but if you have vacation and want to jam to your favorite songs, while you dream, then go for it. Music has a weird way of controlling our brain, but it’s very interesting to see how it reacts to different sounds.
