So you’ve decided to upgrade to fresh food – or maybe you’re just not satisfied with the one you’re currently feeding your pup.
But you sit down at your laptop, type in “fresh food for dogs,” and are flooded with options. You could never possibly try all of them and test which ones are exactly right. I’ve been there, and I’m here to help!
I isolated two of the top-rated fresh food brands, Nom Nom and Ollie, and tested them against each other. Read on for how they compare.
(Spoiler: Ollie ended up being my dog’s preference!)
My dog Dill (short for Dill Pickles, obviously) is a very lucky pup – he got to try two premium fresh food options back to back! We started with Nom Nom, and I have to say, I was immediately impressed by how the food looked – clearly discernible meats and veggies that I could probably eat if I wanted to. They offer 4 different recipes: Beef Mash, Chicken Cuisine, Pork Potluck, and Turkey Fare. I appreciated the variety, since Dill has a sensitive stomach, and I hate the idea of feeding him the same thing every day.
Ordering was easy – just fill out a questionnaire for perfectly portioned packages, pick out some flavor faves, and get ready to feed your dog nutrient-rich fresh food. I was a bit disappointed in their delivery options, however. These packages come every 4 weeks, whether you like it or not.
The packages arrived exactly as promised, frozen in dry ice and ready for the freezer. Via the questionnaire, they measure out precise portions for you, so if you’re aiming for an all-Nom-Nom diet, that’s two packets a day. Once thawed (they last 5 days in the fridge), you pour out the packets and serve.
I absolutely loved how easy they were to divvy up, the pieces easily falling out with no need for painstaking scraping. And Dill loved them, too. None of the recipes bothered his tummy, and he devoured all of them, although he seemed to love Pork Potluck the most.
Not bad, Nom Nom. Not bad.
Next came Ollie. A couple HUGE differences I noticed right off the bat – Ollie is made with certifiable human-grade ingredients. Created with a vet nutritionist, these recipes are cooked low and slow, to lock in nutrients at their peak. Additionally, their recipes include both veggies AND fruits, to really round out your pup’s diet. And, I have to say, this food smelled way better than Nom Nom.
The subscription, although similar – a more in-depth questionnaire that tailors the food to your pet’s exact needs – allowed a little more customization with delivery, as well as providing Mixed and Half Fresh meal plans to adapt to budgetary or dietary constraints. Ollie also has a baked option available with your Mixed meal plan that includes the same human-grade ingredients and nutrient-preserving cooking process.
Their selection impressed me, too. Five different recipes – Beef with Sweet Potatoes, Chicken with Carrots, Turkey with Blueberries, Lamb with Cranberries, and Pork with Apples – plus callouts about which ones are ideal for sensitive tummies (namely, Chicken and Pork).
When it comes to packaging and portions, Ollie takes the upper hand again. You can either check the information that comes in your box, or consult the convenient Ollie app to know exactly how much to feed your pup. Food lasts 4 days in the fridge once thawed, and storage is a breeze with the scoop and puptainer they give you in your Starter Box.
Dill was definitely a fan, licking the bowl clean every time no matter which recipe I put in front of him. It’s looking like we have a clear winner…
Although both are awesome choices for a healthy, happy dog, Ollie couldn’t be beat. A human-grade, holistic diet that’s easy to store and serve? Yeah, I renewed my subscription.
